Winter's Song by Ken Bewick Go to the bittler mountain, drink your fill of frozen waterfalls The snow is falling Down by the quiet streams where ice has formed around the rocks and reeds The winter's calling You'll hear a warning from the heavy tops of trees the sun was glowing But you won't see it till it's finished snowing The cliffs all shrouded in the white, they rise like ghosts into the sky They're disappearing You want to climb the highest point Into the clouds to meet the voice that you are hearing You feel your heartbeat From the heavy tops of trees you'll hear a warning You feel so small beneath this winter's morning Weeks agao the leaves were gold and falling through the sunlight And now you're standing in the snow and the world's gone black and white The world's gone black and white You're standing in the frozen world, the air absorbs your every word The snow is falling You'll hear a warning from the heavy tops of trees forever falling You feel so small beneath this winter's morning

The Fair Queen by Ken Bewick I was off the beaten track, the forest was evergreen I was never going back, and then I saw the fair queen I'd seen her face before, and I don't know what it means In life you're never sure but I'm sure I knew the fair queen Her eyes were warm and light, she had the finest form I'd ever seen As sure as day to night I fell in love with the fair queen I knew she loved me too 'cause she picked me up on wings I followed where she flew, leading me down the evergreens She knew where she was going, so me I had no fright My heartbeat it was knowing that I'd sleep with the forest queen tonight Her house was earthly old, I entered there a baby But I never had to be told what to do with a lady She undressed me at her breast, her touch was like a rare breeze I felt her soft caress and I was making love with the fair queen We fell asleep in the morn, when our pleasure had been taken And I awoke forlorn, alone in the woods and naked

Long Lost Valley by Ken Bewick Following the big creek twenty-nine miles Going through the Devil's Canyon The fork in the river laid me back for weeks In the Long Lost Valley Circle in the sun saw a bird that sang In the shadows where I was standing The heat of the day was blinding me In the Long Lost Valley Can I catch a ride on that big train Baby, I'm so sorry but I just can't stay The wind on the river's got me talkin' to myself Didn't think I'd be gone so many days Am I so far away? Am I so far away? Lucky if I make three miles today goin' through the Devil's canyon The winding river had nothin' to say In the Long Lost Valley Yeah I heard the sound of the Santa Fe train in the breeze where I was standing But when I got there was nothin' but air In the Long Lost Valley Can I catch a ride on your black wings Singing, I'm so sorry but I just can't stay The wind on the river's got me talkin' to myself Didn't think I'd be gone so many days Am I so far away? Am I so far away? What has happened to my mind? What has happened to my mind? Have I been left behind? Have I been left behind? Oh the winding river had nothing to say goin' through the Devil's Canyon Tomorrow's gonna be the same as today In the Long Lost Valley Yeah, I heard the sound of the Santa Fe train in the heat where I was standin' But when I got there was nothin' but air In the Long Lost Valley Can I catch a ride on that big train Baby, I'm so sorry but I just can't stay The wind on the river's got me talkin' to myself Didn't think I'd be gone so many days Am I so far away.....

Captain Scott by Ken Bewick In 1840 Captain Scott sailed away Left us all, said he would return someday All the things that I learned could not match what he learned With every second, every day that I wait With every moment, each new thought I think Early in the morning, early in the day on the sea Call your brother, cry your wind in the sails Stagger stammer, white-knuckled clutch at rails Standing on a firm foot, look out at the black soot hail Down in Cuba, dark and wet as a well Strum on gut strings, sing at leafy terrain Look out on the beaches, look out over gray slate rain Captain Scott hangs a tattered cap on a tree Captain, captain weary of the sea Find sure footing, rest is all that we need Now I've grown old and my face is a mask full of lines Thought that maybe rain and sun were mine Just when I was leaving, falling through the ceiling high Broken cups I stepped on much of my time Cuts of glass, a waste of blood on the line And I never did sail out Captain Scott on my mind And I never did sail out Captain Scott on my mind

Blue Sky, Red Sky by Ken Bewick Here in the microwaves coming from the cityscapes Where you and all your happiness go by The sun burning down on you and me, I have feelings too And slow goes the circle of our lives Our days are days that cover everything And hope, the hope that's carried on for years and years The lonely swimmer breathing in the tide The girl she is not so strong, the boy wore the crown too long And washed in the rivers running by The moon looking down around and underneath your shadow now And slow goes the circle of our lives Our time, we're marking of the calendars And songs, we sang them but for everyone and won Listening to all enormous tides When there is blue sky, when there is blue sky When there is red sky, when there is red sky When there is blue sky When fire is our enemy and water is catastrophe When you and all your innocence go by The wind blowin' on my eyes, then over where the city lies Slow goes the circle of our lives Our time, we take our time with everything This time I hope to learn where people live And live listening to all enormous tides When there is blue sky, when there is blue sky When there is red sky, when there is red sky When there is blue sky

Eve 04:20
Eve by Ken Bewick Well I looked out my window, the garden was green, it was autumn time The orchard was overflowing, there were grapes on the vine From the corner of my ears I caught the sound of a heavenly song Later on that morning I saw Eve reclining on my lawn Not a stitch of clothes from her head to her toes, she was basking in the sun I offered her some sunblock, and I helped her spread it on She said 'The wings of angels flew me here' I said 'That's quite a way to travel' I was dumbstruck at the sight of Eve Reclining among the apples She seemed happy to hear that I did not use any pesticides 'It's enough you got holes in the ozone,' she said, and she rolled onto her side And the swell of her breasts, and the curve of her hips left me mesmerized and dumb 'I can't recommend the apples', I said as I handed her a plum She said 'For heaven's sake, haven't you got a snake to keep me company?' I felt around in my pockets, All I found were my car keys Then out from under the old cucumbers slid a very slender fellow 'Are you looking for me?' the snake said to Eve His skin was all black and yellow Well she looked him up and down, and said 'You're not that big around, but I really can't resist.' I watched them disappear into the carrot patch and I phoned up my psychiatrist Well I've been locked up here for thirty long years, half my life is gone 'Cause nobobdy believes that I saw Eve reclining on my lawn

Summertown 04:16
Summertown by Ken Bewick Downtown Angel sitting on the cinema roof A ray of light for the summer girl, a candy cane for her sweet tooth And the stars rising up The river opens wide so we can follow her down Me and the gang go walking Drinking in the moonlight here in Summertown Downtown angel, her hair full of sand A ray of life for the summer girl, solace for the lonely may And the stars fill the sky The river opens wide enough to swallow her down Me and the gang go walking down the banks Drinking the moonlight here in Summertown Summertime will come again, will come again to Summertown Downtown angel sitting on the cinema roof Could be any other, but the summer holds the proof And the stars sinking down The river opens wide and then it swallows her down Me and the gang go walking Drinking in the moonlight here in Summertown Summertime will come again, will come again to Summertown

The Turtle Without A Shell by Ken Bewick The turtle without a shell was teased by all his family And all his friends as well, oh yes he was unhappy How the cold wind blew, and it gave him such a chill Oh life is never easy for a turtle without a shell The turtle wen to town but he didn't have no money To buy himself a shell, his nose was cold and runny People laughed and dogs barked and cats meowed as well Oh life is never easy for a turtle without a shell He went up to a house where a little girl was playing She thought he was a giant mouse, and with the hose she sprayed him He tried to run and hide, but he stumbled and he fell Oh life is never easy for a turtle without a shell The little girl she ran inside calling to her mother 'Mommy, I've just hosed a mouse!' and they ran out together But mother noticed right away the little turtle's scales 'It's not a mouse, my dear, it's a turtle without a shell' They took him in the kitchen, the soup was on, he smelled it They fed him and they made a shell from dad's old Army helmet They mounted it upon his back and words can hardly tell How happy and how proud he was to finally have a shell So the turtle went back home and lived happily forever And you and I are just the same, we'll always be together Sometimes you'll get sad and your life will feel like hell But at least you'll never be a little turtle without a shell

Georgie and Me Went Out On A Fish Hunt by Ken Bewick Georgie and me went out on a fish hunt Hoping to catch us some nice sea bass We brought along our old life jackets, Our fishing gear and a can of gas Our fishing gear and a can of gas We rented a boat from a local dock We hauled on the box of supplies we'd brought Said Georgie to me as we headed for sea Hey, let's take a look at what we brought Let's take a look at what we brought I opened the box and out fell some tuna A Coleman stove and a loaf of bread Some cheddar cheese and some peanut butter A carton of Ritz and a box of Pez A carton of Ritz and a box of Pez Six pairs of socks and a garden tomato A soccer ball and an unripe peach A six pack of Tab and some strawberry jam Two and a half pounds of chocolate each Two and a half pounds of chocolate each A tent for the rain and some soap for the laundry A bucket of nuts and bolts and tacks A pound and a half of Seattle smoked salmon A frisbee, a radio and three sets of jacks A frisbee, a readio and three sets of jacks A telescope and a portable tape deck Three dozen eggs and a pound of ham Sixteen kinds of Italian wine A Habitrail and a can of Spam A Habitrail and a can of Spam A set of stilts and some toenail clippers A book of matches and a couple of flares An orange, a lizard, and a pair of shoes Some Q-tips, a candle and a book about bears Some Q-tips, a candle and a book about bears Georgie and me, we were all in a wonder Looking at that big pile of crap Then Georgie extolled, "We've forgotten our poles!" But we were too far for turning back We were too far for turning back Well at least, said he, we could lighten the load By sending some of this down to the sea And so, with that, we got down to the task Of chucking off what we did not need Of chucking off what we did not need I tossed a three-toed table lamp And Georgie hucked a ceiling fan We traded off on the pairs of socks And then we ate the can of Spam And then we ate that can of Spam And then I tossed the ping pong table and Georgie hucked a garden rake I heard him shout when I threw out all of our chocolate by mistake All of our chocolate by mistake uh-oh! Well we watched that chocolate sinking down And Georgie said, "Oh, this is the end.." But he never lost his cool with me Georgie and me, were the best of friends Georgie and me, we're the best of friends We turned 'round the boat and we headed for home With nary a'nibble to our names Georgie and me we returned from the sea Singing 'The chocolate was to blame,' Singing 'The chocolate was to blame'! We returned the boat, we walked up the plank Only an hour or two we'd missed Went to the bank and withdrew twenty dollars Went to the pub and we got really pissed Went to the pub and we got really pissed

about

A largely acoustic affair, I recorded this on my own with some borrowed digital gear. It's folky!
Enjoy.
