Sitting On A Fencepost

Sittin on a fence post underneath a big sun
shaded by a big hat shouldering a small gun
the porch of the hotel is in disrepair
the barbershop's still got a broom and a chair
chewing on his hat strap wonderin where they've all gone

he pushes through a doorway escaping from the high noon
the swingin doors creak and bang into the saloon
the beers long dry, the taps full of sand
the table's overturned but the chairs still stand
looks back to the white light, wonderin where theyve all gone

there's a break in the fence, there's some tack hangin up in the stable
but there isn't no map to get back to the days that he knew
he could wander the desert in search of a plausible fable
but the town is deserted and he don't know what he should do

he peers around the corner, then he sticks his boot out
the bathhouse boardwalk staged like it's a shootout
but the old wild west is still as can be
he shoulders his rifle and walks up the street
spits into the sand, wonderin where they've all gone

there's a break in the fence, there's some old tack hung up in the stable
but there isn't a map to get back to the place that he knew
he could wander the desert forever in search of a fable
but the town is deserted and he don't know what he should do.
